Take-Two plans to monetize the GTA5 FiveM & RDR2 RedM Mods

In August 2023, Rockstar shared some big news. Rockstar said that they’ve teamed up with Cfx.re, the folks who made GTA 5 FiveM and RDR 2 RedM. And just yesterday, during Take-Two’s earnings conference call, Strauss Zelnick talked about their plans to monetize both FiveM and RedM.

This shouldn’t of course surprise anyone. The writing was on the wall and most of us saw that coming. After all, we expressed our concerns about this in our previous article. So yeah, this doesn’t come as a shock to us.

In case you didn’t know, FiveM and RedM are some of the best mods for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. These mods let people who play on PC get together and have fun online. These cool mods make it possible to play on custom game servers that people can set up just for fun. And guess what? Some folks say that FiveM is even better than the official online mode in GTA 5.

Ironically, Rockstar Games claimed back in 2015 that FiveM was an unauthorized multiplayer mod for GTA5. Rockstar was claiming that the mod was violating its rules. Not only that, but Rockstar banned that mod. Hell, they even banned players who were using it (who weren’t part of the modding team). Then Take-Two sent private investigators in an attempt to shut down this project. And now, almost a decade later, the FiveM team is a part of Rockstar Games.

My guess is that Cfx.re will be a big part of Grand Theft Auto 6. Take-Two will release the first trailer for GTA 6 in December. And it will be funny as hell if this new GTA game is only announced for consoles and not for PC. It will be truly hilarious since the GTA6 leaked build was playable on PC. But hey, this is Rockstar we’re talking about.

Stay tuned for more!
